Physician Terminology Manager

College of American Pathologists (CAP)

The Organization

The College of American Pathologists (CAP) is a medical society serving more than 16,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world.  It is the world’s largest medical association composed exclusively of pathologists certified by the American Board of Pathology, and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance.  The College is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective medical care. CAP members are involved in a broad range of disciplines, including surgical pathology, cytopathology, dermatopathology, neuropathology, forensic pathology, blood banking/transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, microbiology immunopathology, hematology, genetics, and molecular pathology.  The current president of the CAP is Jared Schwartz, MD, PhD, FCAP.

SNOMED Terminology Solutions (STS) is a CAP division formed in April 2007. STS is a successor to SNOMED International, the CAP division which invested more than four decades developing, maintaining and supporting SNOMED terminology that has been adopted or used by governments, software suppliers and healthcare organizations in more than 30 countries of the world. CAP recently sold SNOMED Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) to the non-profit International Health Terminology Standards Organization (IHTSDO), in Denmark. The IHTSDO has contracted STS as the support organization for the maintenance and further development of the terminology. In addition, STS provides education and consulting services to support the implementation of SNOMED Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT).

SNOMED Clinical Terms

SNOMED CT is a comprehensive, clinical health care terminology and infrastructure focused on making health care knowledge more usable and accessible. It provides a common language that enables consistent capturing, sharing and aggregating health data across specialties and sites of care.

SNOMED CT terminology currently contains over 400,000 health care concepts organized into hierarchies that cover more than 1 million semantic relationships that enable reliability and consistency of data retrieval.  While comprehensive in its own right, SNOMED CT can also be mapped to other medical terminologies and classification systems already in use. This avoids duplicate data capture, while facilitating enhanced health reporting, billing and statistical analysis. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) praised SNOMED CT’s “advanced structure” for meeting most accepted criteria for a well-formed, machine-readable terminology.”

STS works with clients to implement SNOMED CT in a variety of applications. Those applications include, but are not limited to:

  • Electronic Medical Records
  • Computerized Patient Order Entry such as e-prescribing or laboratory order entry
  • Disease templates
  • Remote Intensive Care Unit Monitoring
  • Laboratory Reporting
  • Emergency Room Charting
  • Cancer Reporting
  • Therapeutic Decision Support
  • Genetic Databases
  • Literature Encoding
  • Evidenced-Based Practice Solutions
  • Pharmaceutical Industry
  • Medical Research Studies
  • Clinical Trials
  • Consumer Health Information Services

STS clinical and technical experts provide high quality SNOMED CT education.  STS offers a comprehensive suite of educational programs for administrative, clinical, and technical health care professionals in a variety of clinical settings.  Education offerings range from courses targeted at those with entry-level knowledge of SNOMED CT to those looking to achieve expert-level knowledge.
