Vice President, Perioperative Services
NYU Langone Medical Center
The Organization
Located in the heart of New York City, NYU Langone Medical Center is one of the nation's premier academic centers of excellence in health care, biomedical research, and medical education. For over 167 years, NYU physicians and researchers have made countless contributions to the practice and science of health care. Today the Medical Center consists of NYU School of Medicine, including the Smilow Research Center, the Skirball Institute for Biomolecular Medicine, and the Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences; the three hospitals of NYU Hospitals Center which include:
Tisch Hospital—a 726-bed acute-care general hospital that serves as training site for students and offers a wide array of patient-care programs and leading-edge diagnostic and treatment services.
Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine—one of the world's largest university centers (174 beds) for treatment and training of disabled adults and children, as well as for research in rehabilitation medicine.
NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases—a leader in musculoskeletal care (160);
and other such major programs as the NYU Cancer Institute, the NYU Child Study Center, and the Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders.
Additionally, the strengths of NYU Langone Medical Center include the talents of affiliates and partners, such as Bellevue Hospital Center, the oldest public hospital in the U.S. which provides both acute and long-term healthcare services to patients of all backgrounds, and the Manhattan Veterans Affairs Medical Center, which serves the healthcare needs of New York City's veteran population.
Thanks to a generous, unrestricted $200 million gift to the Medical Center, it was recently renamed the NYU Elaine A. and Kenneth G. Langone Medical Center, in honor of the chairman of its board of trustees and his wife. The gift is the largest in the Medical Center’s history and part of a $2.8 Billion capital campaign. The raised funds will be dedicated to the Medical Center’s plans for a major campus transformation. This will include a series of initiatives to expand NYU’s clinical, educational, and biomedical sciences presence on Manhattan’s East Side. The centerpiece of the multi-year transformation will be a new hospital that is medically, aesthetically, and environmentally state-of-the-art. The multi-year undertaking incorporates long-term growth and revitalization strategies for all major components embraced by the new NYU Langone Medical Center, including all new surgical and Perioperative facilities.
Perioperative Services Environment
Existing surgical and Perioperative services are managed from three locations, which include:
-TH6 Main OR 18 Suites +22 PACU, expanding to 14 more by early 2009)
-TH 10 Ambulatory OR (10 Suites + 30 PACU)
-HCC2 Ambulatory OR (5 Suites + 12 PACU)
A new freestanding Ambulatory Surgical Center will also soon be established at 333 East 38th Street and First Avenue. It will include four new outpatient ORs, recovery beds, observation spaces, and amenities for patients and staff. This off-site facility will free up campus ORs for more-complex inpatient surgeries, while better accommodating the special needs of patients who go home the day of their surgery.
There are presently about 25,000 surgeries performed at NYU Langone Medical Center each year. Some robotically-assisted procedures are performed in the HCC-2 Day/Ambulatory Surgery.
The OR information system recently went through a conversion from the McKesson legacy system, ORBIT to McKesson’s Horizon Surgical Manager (HSM); and the Medical Center plans to migrate its overall technology solution from Eclipsys to Epic in the near future.
NYU Hospitals Center (Tisch & Rusk) earned Magnet designation, the gold standard in nursing excellence, from the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2005. The organization heavily recruits new BSNs from the region, and also is a charter member of the UHC/AACN nationally recognized nurse residency program for new BSN graduates. NYUHC has probably the highest percentage of BSN staff in the nation (92%), and among that, 15% hold masters degrees as direct care givers. Overall, the nurse vacancy rate averages about 7%; turnover has steadily decreased over the last 10 years to about 11 %, lower than the UHC average. Specialty certification is encouraged, and financially compensated, with about 33% of staff, and 65% of nursing leadership certified. A retention bonus was recently implemented in the OR. Not surprisingly, NYU Langone Medical Center is one of four hospitals in New York City without a nursing union.
In the 2007 U.S. News & World Report, NYU Medical Center ranked among the top 20 in the nation in cardiology, geriatrics, neurology, orthopedics, psychiatry, rehabilitation and rheumatology. Overall, it was ranked among premier hospitals in the nation for 12 different specialties.
