MidMichigan Medical Center - Midland
The Organization
MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland is located in a beautiful setting on 146 acres of wooded property and is the largest hospital of MidMichigan Health.
MidMichigan Health acts as a partnership of health providers, services and facilities to 13 subsidiaries and various joint ventures, which includes four hospitals, 2 nursing homes, an assisted living facility, and home care services. System wide, the health system has 481 licensed beds, 200 long term care beds, 20 assisted living beds, more than 4,700 employees, 1,300 volunteers and 360 physicians. This non-profit, tax-exempt organization is led by a 17-member Board of Directors and a 140-person corporate membership. Annual gross revenues are approximately $950 million, with assets valued at more than $800 million. All excess revenues go back into providing care, upgrading services and facilities, fairly compensating employees and creating a supportive work environment.
The Medical Center-Midland is provided leadership and support through a 17-member Board of Trustees with nine voting representatives on the holding company Board. The Midland CEO attends all holding company Board meetings, as well as the corporate Administrative Council.
Since its beginning in 1944, the Medical Center has grown from a 47-bed community hospital into a 250-bed medical center providing a full range of primary care and specialty services to the tri-county region. Specialty care services include; the Pardee Cancer Center, Neuroscience Institute, cardiovascular including open heart surgery, orthopedics, obstetrics, rehabilitation, pediatrics, diabetes/endocrinology, emergency care, psychiatry, respiratory care, social work/spiritual care. Ancillary services include CT scanning, radiation therapy, laboratory, cardiology, cardiac cath lab, pharmacy, radiology, women’s health, comprehensive back program, Joint Camp, aquatic therapy, occupational health and wellness.
The 1,930 individuals employed by the Medical Center make the organization the second largest employer in Midland County. The high level of quality services provided by the employees is complemented by the 190 physicians and over 501 volunteers which resulted in the Medical Center receiving both the 2007 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ and the Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety, based on a study issued by HealthGrades, the nation’s leading independent healthcare ratings company. This marked the third consecutive year in which MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland has received both HealthGrades’ highest awards for overall clinical performance and patient safety.
MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland’s standards for clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance, efficiency, and growth in patient volume also won recognition as one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by Solucient®, part of Thomson Healthcare.
The Family Practice Residency Program at MidMichigan that began in 1969 is one of the oldest programs in the country. The program is designed to train physicians to commit to the personal, continuing and comprehensive care of patients, perform competently in multiple clinical settings, focus on a behavioral approach to patients, possess strong practice management skills, and demonstrate self-directed learning. Since its inception, more than 220 physicians have graduated from the program.
Seven internal medicine hospitalists, two physicians assistants and a family nurse practitioner work closely with patients, family members, primary care physicians, specialists and other departments of the Medical Center to provide high-quality and effective inpatient care. In addition, two family practice physicians provide a similar program in conjunction with the residency program.
In the summer of 2007 the Medical Center opened a newly renovated critical care unit. The project is part of the growing comprehensive cardiovascular services program that includes open heart surgery and elective angioplasty. The next phase of the renovation includes shutting down the current Coronary Care Unit for renovation and redecoration. Once complete, that unit will become part of a renovated Progressive Care Unit making an updated specialty care area.
The Neuroscience Institute at MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland has been designated as a NeuroscienceCenter of Excellence (COE) according to the 2006 Neuroscience Center of Excellence Survey. MidMichigan is the only provider in the region to offer these advanced treatments: Gamma Knife, Deep brain stimulation, Prestige LP Cervical Disc Clinical Trial, and a Nationally-recognized Multiple Sclerosis Clinic.
MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland has access to some of the latest and most advanced technologies available in Michigan: 1.0 Tesla Open MRI, 3.0 Tesla MRI, Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Capsule Endoscopy, Cardiac Catheterization, Percutaneous Coronary Intervention, Deep Brain Stimulation, Digital mammography, Gamma Knife®, ImageChecker® , IMRT Radiation Therapy, Lithotripsy, MammoSite® Brachytherapy, PET Scanning, Pharmacy Robot, Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS), SilverHawk™ Plaque Excision System, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, 64 slice Ultrafast CT and soon a dual service 64 slice CT, and Vagal Nerve Stimulation.
The MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland Board of Directors and MidMichigan Health corporate board have approved a $66.2 million expansion and renovation of the 1974 Harlow Building, which houses the Medical Center’s inpatient services. A second phase (estimated cost of $55 million) is also planned and expected to be approved in the first quarter 2008. The Michigan Department of Community Health has approved MidMichigan’s Certificate of Need (CON) request for the $66.2 million project but still must approve the $55 million project. Plans are to break ground on the first project expansion in spring 2008.

The Position
Location
Midland, Michigan. MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland is located in central Michigan within the city of Midland. The city of Midland has a population of 41,685 and is located in Midland County which has a total population of 82,874. The average household income for the County is $68,898 with future projections forecasting increases into 2011.
In 2007, the Dow Diamond was completed. It is centrally located in downtown Midland. This minor league stadium quickly established itself as one of the premiere minor league stadiums in the country when it was named the Best New Ballpark of 2007 by Baseball Digest and its Grounds Crew was awarded the 2007 Midwest League Grounds Crew of the Year.
Dow Diamond is home to the Great Lakes Loons, a single A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. April 13, 2007 marked the Loons inaugural game at Dow Diamond. The Loons enjoyed a very successful first year, drawing over 324,000 fans to Dow Diamond during the 2007 season.
Unofficially the “World Softball Capital”, Midland continually hosts state, national and international softball tournaments. In 1999, Midland was the site of the final qualifier for the 2000 Olympics’ USA Women’s Softball Team. In 2004, the USA Softball Women's National Teamvisited Midland for an exhibition game against the Midland Lady Explorers. Midland was the only stop in Michigan for the U.S. team that won the gold during the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece.
The outstanding Midland Public School System is comprised of 13 elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools. Midland’s K-12 public and private school systems enjoy a long-standing tradition of excellence. For example, in 2005, four of the five local public high schools in the greater Midland community had graduation rates above the statewide rate; most notable was Midland Public Schools, which had rates as high as 10% above the state rate of 88.7%. And for the 2007-2008 school year, 100% of Midland Public Schools teachers met State of Michigan guidelines as “highly qualified”. The 2005-2006 state assessment results show 100 percent of Midland Public Schools buildings made Adequate Yearly Progress as required by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
In addition to these notable programs, Midland has exemplary schools, as evidenced by Expansion Management magazine’s ranking Midland Public Schools in the top 17% of school districts nationwide for 2007. US News and World Report recently awarded H.H. Dow High School a Silver Award as a top ranked high school.
Midland has a vast array of cultural opportunities ranging from music and theater to science and the arts. The Midland Center for the Arts provides state-of-the-art stages for audiences of 400 to 1,500 and has featured everything from local performances to world-class orchestras and dance companies.
The City of Midland maintains 72 City parks. Small neighborhood parks nestled within residential areas are found throughout the city so that each neighborhood has a place of quiet recreation. While neighborhood parks are just right for smaller gatherings, larger gatherings can enjoy the amenities of two of Midland’s largest parks, Emerson and Plymouth, which feature large sheltered picnic areas, playgrounds and a pool.
Nature is also found in abundance at Midland’s Dow Gardens. Spread over 100 acres, Dow Gardens shares with its visitors the landscaping designed for the home of The Dow Chemical Company.
More than 85 places of worship represent most denominations and a variety of architectural styles.
The Dow Chemical Company and Dow Corning Corporation are two Fortune 500 companies with world headquarters and major manufacturing plants in the community, adding to the excellence of Midland through their continued scientific research and development. The Midland Cogeneration Venture, one of the largest gas-fired cogeneration power plants in the world, came aboard in 1991 and is the City’s largest taxpayer.
Many of Michigan’s philanthropic organizations are based in Midland Michigan and include: The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, The Dow Chemical Company Foundation, Midland Area Community Foundation, The Alden and Vada Dow Family Foundations, The Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation, and The Charles J. Strosacker Foundation. These organizations have been very supportive of MidMichigan Health and the Medical Center-Midland, having contributed over 30 million dollars to the Health System through the years, much of that going to the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland.
Midland is conveniently located in the center of Michigan, just 15 minutes away from MBS International Airport. Private and corporate jets can also be serviced at our community's general aviation airport, Jack Barstow Municipal Airport, located in the city of Midland. A two- to three-hour drive in any direction by car will fulfill most all of your vacation, sightseeing or big-city needs including spending time on the shores of Michigan’s five Great Lakes.
Close-to-home higher education is provided by six area institutes, colleges and universities including: Central Michigan University, Northwood University, Saginaw Valley State University, Delta College, MidMichigan Community College, and Davenport University.
Midland provides three indoor ice-skating rinks at its 107,000-square-foot Midland Civic Arena, which opened in September 2005. The facility features a total of three rinks: two NHL-sized and one Olympic-sized. A highly-praised outdoor in-line skate rink that doubles as an ice skating rink in the winter also graces the community's landscape. In 1999, Midland proudly opened the first Michigan Outdoor Skatepark Facility where skateboarders and in-line skaters of all ages can practice and perform the latest skateboarding and in-line skating techniques.
The Midland Community Center provides everything from racquetball courts to a 20,000-square-foot indoor leisure pool. The Midland Community Tennis Center is recognized as one of the top 25 tennis facilities in the country and is home to the annual Dow Corning Women’s Tennis Tournament, drawing top professionals from around the world. Two public golf courses with a total of 54 holes; two community pools; and a Midland Soccer Complex round out a community with outstanding facilities.

A moderate amount of regional travel within the MidMichigan Health service area is anticipated. Active involvement with appropriate professional societies and organizations might also involve some national travel.
Reporting Relationships
As described in the MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland Bylaws, the President and Chief Executive Officer shall be an ex-officio director of MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland and shall head its administrative staff. The President and Chief Executive Officer shall be a member of and the representative of the Board of Directors and the management of the Medical Center, and shall have all the authority and responsibility necessary to operate the corporation’s activities and departments, subject to the policies of the Board of Directors or its Executive Committee. The Medical Center President and Chief Executive Officer shall act as a duly authorized representative of the Board of Directors in all matters in which the Chief Executive Office shall report, as directed by the Board, to the Chairman of the Board of Directors between Board meetings and to the Board and its Executive Committee at each meeting on all matters relating to the corporation. The President and Chief Executive Officer shall be responsible for assuring that the hospital provides the highest quality of care possible; maintains a fiscally sound operation; fulfills both short- and long-term strategic plans; provides an effective, safe and positive working environment for employees and complies with all applicable laws, regulations and accreditation requirements. The President and Chief Executive Officer has a solid line reporting relationship to the Medical Center Board and a dotted line reporting relationship to the President of MidMichigan Health. The President and CEO of the Medical Center also serves together with the President of MidMichigan Health, as the key member of the MidMichigan Health executive leadership team.
Responsibilities
The President and CEO of MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland will be responsible for managing services and programs that affect the operational performance of services and programs for all of MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland and its facilities. This person will ultimately ensure the overall operational and financial integrity of the Medical Center through oversight of the day-to-day operation. The President and CEO will provide leadership and management oversight for the development of high quality, cost effective and integrated clinical programs within the entire operation. The management portfolio held by this leader is notably diverse, with corresponding broad organizational implications and complexity, characterized by substantial scope of responsibility in this respect.
The following comprise the principal duties and responsibilities of the President and Chief Executive Officer of MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland:
Assures the promotion and implementation of the Medical Center’s mission and philosophy in discharging both internal and external affairs.

Maintains and enhances the Medical Center’s fiscal position according to pre-established objectives, including overall responsibility for the annual budgeting process, strategic planning process, and effective day-to-day operating procedures.

Plays a key leadership role in the development of both short-and long-term operational strategies.

Assures that the organization continues to provide high quality health care through established performance improvement measures such that compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and accreditation requirements are met.

Establishes and maintains an effective management team through proper selection, continuous development, and appropriate motivation.

Assures that effective relationships exist between the medical staff, the Board of Directors, management, employees and volunteers.
